The seminar "Exploring the Gut Microbiota: From Function to Application" took students from HUTECH’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry on a fascinating journey into the world of gut microbiota, led by Prof. Yuan-Man Hsu from Tunghai University.

This specialized seminar provided students with essential insights into the role and impact of microorganisms on both human and animal health. Conducted entirely in English, the event not only deepened their expertise but also helped enhance their language skills and access to international research materials.

During the session, Prof. Yuan-Man Hsu discussed the development of gut microbiota from the fetal stage to adulthood. She emphasized that gut microbiota is not just a collection of bacteria but a complex ecosystem that plays a crucial role in immune regulation and overall health. She explained that microbiota formation begins in the womb and continues to evolve throughout life, influenced by diet, environment, and antibiotic use.

Notably, Prof. Hsu introduced research on Lactobacillus Rhamnosus JB3, a bacterium capable of inhibiting Helicobacter pylori infection—the primary cause of gastric diseases. She provided a detailed explanation of how this bacterium interacts with the immune system to help the body combat harmful pathogens. This research not only opens new avenues for treating stomach-related diseases but also underscores the significance of microbiota in modern medicine.

Additionally, she highlighted the importance of using probiotics and prebiotics to generate postbiotics, which help strengthen gut microbiota. She explained that supplementing beneficial bacteria and prebiotic fiber can improve gut health, thereby boosting immune resistance—a particularly crucial factor as digestive health issues become increasingly prevalent.
